On 16th and 17th of April, 2013 the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya (REAOL) and the World Bank organized a workshop on the Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency in Tripoli, Libya. The workshop aimed at promoting the integration of renewable energy technologies (solar and wind) with the National Electricity System of Libya, as well as exploring means of energy efficiency implementation measures, with a particular focus on the building sector. The workshop was opened by the Libyan Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister, Dr. AwadIbraik Al-Baraasi and attended by the former Prime Minister of Libya, DrAbdurrahim El-Keib.

It was recommended that Libyan government should have a minimum level of renewable energy target of 10% of electricity generated by 2025 and REAOL to prepare a roadmap towards the realization of the presented renewable energy strategy as well as the energy efficiency program. Moreover, it was strongly stressed to set up an institutional and legal framework of energy efficiency and a legal framework electricity law for enabling private sector investment in renewable energy electricity products.

Mrs. Amel Bida, Program Manager – Research and Analysis at RCREEE presented a paper entitled “Best Practices in Energy Efficiency in Buildings” and she moderated one of the workshop’s sessions dealing with the financing mechanisms for renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.
