GN-SEC Data Portals

The non-availability of reliable and updated (sustainable) energy quality information and data is a major barrier for the uptake of sustainable energy and climate technology (SECTs) markets in developing countries. Particularly, in least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS) the national capacities to systematically collect, update and analyze data are often weakly developed. These efforts often remain isolated and prohibit effective joint planning of energy resources between countries. The lack of data availability and reliability throughout all sectors (incl. rural energy) is perceived as a major barrier for attracting foreign investments. A harmonized data base is also a pre-condition for the establishment of integrated and inclusive regional sustainable energy and climate technology (SECTs) markets following joint standards and regulations (e.g. energy efficiency standards, renewable energy equipment standards).

In this context, the GN-SEC centers are working towards the creation of regional knowledge data and information platforms and the strengthening of national and civil society driven data collection processes. A GN-SEC working group on data and information systems has been established in 2019 and will bring together various key partners (e.g. REN-21, REEEP, CESEFOR).
