Partner Meeting on the preparation of an Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances Project in EAC and SADC

Hosted by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) in Stockholm, UNIDO held a project preparatory meeting on 17 to 19 April 2018 on "Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances in EAC and SADC" (EELA).

The EELA project is currently under development and seeks to promote a market transformation for energy efficient lighting and appliances in the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC). More specifically, the project aims to create market and institutional conditions to enable a transformation of the sector to stimulate increased diffusion of efficient lighting products and appliances across all sectors.  The EELA project will bring regional support to private sector-led activities that will lead to increased use of energy efficient high quality lighting and appliances through regional regulatory and trade harmonization interventions; while also considering inclusiveness of all project activities to assure socially sustainable project outcomes.  Ultimately, the EELA project will increase access to modern energy services across various sectors and promote private sector involvement.

In this 2 days workshop, experts from SACREEE, EACREEE, the Swedish Energy Agency, the Swedish Standard Institute and CLASP were discussingthe planned activities, time frame and execution modalities. As part of the workshop, a visit to the testing laboratory for lighting at the Swedish Energy Agency was organised. The project seeks to strengthen testing facilities in EAC and SADC through capacity building and equipment for the local laboratories.

Back to back to the project meeting, Sida and business Sweden organised a seminar for Swedish companies on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, where UNIDO and the regional centres were presenting the EELA project idea and possibilities for engagement of the private sector.
