Launch of activities to commemorate the 48th anniversary of ECOWAS in Praia

Praia, May 4, 2023 - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) completes on May 28, 48 years of its establishment, and a range of activities began today in the city of Praia, aiming at informing the general public about some of the projects and activities that are being implemented by the community in the country. During the month of May, sports and cultural activities will be held, which highlight the valorization of crossbreeding and cultural exchange between people, as well as raising awareness for a deeper understanding of the role of the Community.

During the opening ceremony, which took place in CERMI, the Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Samuel Lamptey, stressed the importance of an increasingly cohesive ECOWAS, reminding those present of the crucial role that the organization plays to promote the development and integration of the people of the sub-region. 

Also, present at the ceremony, the Executive Director of the ECOWAS Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), Francis Sempore, emphasized the strong ties of collaboration between the Government of Cabo Verde and the agency, which are evident through the implementation of different projects in the different islands of the country, thus contributing to an increase in development and access to energy. 

In her turn, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Dr. Miryan Vieira, highlighted the relevance of ECOWAS intervention as a key factor for Cabo Verde to assert its identity as a driving force for the entire West African region.

A photographic exhibition open to the public is available in CERMI during the month of May and other awareness-raising activities will be carried out by the Office of the Resident Representative of the President of the ECOWAS Commission in Cabo Verde, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cabo Verde.
