Fit for Energy Efficiency - first EE training week was held on the continent!
The East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE) and the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) teamed up with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Department of Energy of South Africa in the organization of the first Energy Efficiency in Emerging Economies (E4) Training Week for Sub-Saharan Africa. The training, running from 14 to 17 October 2019 in Pretoria, South Africa, brought together 150 policy makers from 33 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with the aim to equip participants with knowledge and skills to deliver effective energy efficiency initiatives in their respective countries.
The E4 Training Week comprised five parallel work streams on energy efficiency policy in a) buildings; b) appliances and equipment; c) industry; d) cities; and e) indicators and evaluation.
Currently, SACREEE and EACREEE are jointly implementing a project on Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances in East and Southern Africa (EELA). The E4 Training Week provided an excellent opportunity for all EELA country and regional focal points from East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to participate in the Appliances and Equipment stream.
The training comprised both theoretical aspects and hands-on exercises as well as successful case studies from across the globe to equip participants with greater knowledge and skills to develop and implement effective energy efficiency initiatives in their respective countries. The participants received a Certificate of Attendance upon completion of the course.
About the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances in East and Southern Africa (EELA)
The EELA project is funded by the Government of Sweden through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and is implemented by UNIDO with the key executing partners being the EACREEE based in Uganda and SACREEE based in Namibia.
The project seeks to create market and institutional conditions to transform the market environment to stimulate increased diffusion of efficient lighting products and appliances across all sectors in SADC and EAC regions.
