Kitchener de-pollution project consortium holds a coordination meeting with Dakahlia Governor

February 07, 2021- Cairo, Egypt: Following the recent launch of the first of its kind waste management project, the de-pollution project consortium held a meeting with Dakahlia Governor Dr. Ayman Mokhtar, to discuss the Governorate perspectives for the development and cleansing of Kitchener drainage.

Kitchener Drain is one of the severely polluted drains in Egypt resulting in significant environmental, economic and social harm. It extends 69 km and passes through the governorates of Kafr El Sheikh ("KES"), Gharbeya ("GHB") and Dakahleya ("DKH") and discharges into the Mediterranean Sea.

The de-pollution project tackles mainly solid waste management of the Kitchener Drain in Egypt. Accordingly, it represents a key cornerstone in a larger investment programme aiming at the de-pollution, wastewater & sanitation and drain infrastructure rehabilitation of the drain.

During the meeting, the project’s team presented the initial work plan, project stages and the expected outcomes and thanked the governor for his feedback and all the support he kindly provided for the success of the project.

The consortium team also conducted a site visit for Sandoub treatment facility where around 850 Thousand tons of waste accumulations were removed. The same site will be transformed into hosting the largest treatment facility in Egypt with a capacity of 1200 Ton daily under the project’s activities.

Notably, the project is implemented under the loan agreement between the Egyptian Government and the EU and EBRD as a funding agency.  The project will support the de-pollution of the drain and the Mediterranean Sea. It will also improve the health and environmental situation of the people living in the drain catchment area as well as strengthen the economy by improving the irrigation water quality in the three governorates.

RCREEE, Liban Consult AGM and Projacs consortium is leading the consultancy services for the implementation and construction of the project.
