SADC Development Finance Institutions Workshop

The SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) in partnership with the SADC Development Finance Resource Centre (SADC-DFRC), University of Pretoria Centre for Human Rights and Boston University’s Global Development Policy (GDP) Center held a workshop with regional development finance institutions (DFI) on 14 and 15 October 2019 in Gaborone, Botswana. The workshop was held under the theme, “Expanding renewable energy for access and development: the role of development finance institutions in Southern Africa” brought together a focussed group of key development finance experts from across the SADC member states as well as international cooperating partners.

The objectives of the workshop include:

  1. Identify barriers and binding constraints that DFIs face for financing renewable and accessible energy in SADC countries.
  2. Identify and share best practices for DFI engagement in renewable and accessible energy finance in SADC countries.
  3. Identify policy interventions that could overcome barriers and scale up renewable and accessible energy in SADC countries.

The outcomes of the workshop will inform a report on the role of development finance institutions for expanding renewable energy for access and development in Southern Africa.
