Background:
U4E is now starting new activities in East and Southern Africa to address refrigerating appliances and room air conditioners given the significant energy, climate and development benefits and opportunities. The activities will be in collaboration the Energy Efficient Lighting and Appliances (EELA) project, the SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE) and East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency (EACREEE) , and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
The engagement is proposed in two primary phases to support: 1) Regional agreement in EAC and SADC to align on specific Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and labels for both air conditioners and refrigerating appliances; and 2) Assistance to a subset of countries in EAC and SADC that move ahead with implementation of the regionally agreed-upon contents.
Result of Service:
- SADC Regional Market Assessment for air conditioners and refrigerating appliances with input from SADC member states.
- Technical Notes for air conditioners and refrigerating appliances developed and presented to SADC member states and regional partners.
- SADC Technical Committee convened for MEPS and labelling for air conditioners and refrigerating appliances
Qualifications/special skills
Academic Qualifications:
Advanced university degree at Masters level in energy studies or any related field.
Experience:
- At least 4 years of professional experience with energy efficiency policies and programmes.
- Sufficient knowledge of the SADC energy situation, energy (renewable energy and energy efficiency) policies, legal and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong familiarity with the informational needs of senior decision makers in regional and national energy-related organisations and initiatives.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills on technical and policy aspects of energy policies and programmes.
- Basic familiarity with air conditioner and refrigerator markets or similar.
- Experience in developing and building coalitions of support for new initiatives.
Language:
Fluency in spoken and written English is required and fluency in spoken and written French and/or Portuguese is an asset.
